BEL AIR, MD — The playground at Rockfield Park will be closed for a little more than a week this fall due to improvements. "We're going to replace all the components of the playground — the ladders, the climbing devices," Bel Air Director of Public Works Steve Kline said at a work session Tuesday at Town Hall. The Rockfield playground is about 25 years old, Kline said. While the "main structure is in good condition," he explained, the work will "bring [it] all up to speed." Leathers and Associates, which built the original playground in 1996, will be contracted to make the adjustments. Work is not expected to begin until September or October and will take about eight to 10 days to complete, according to Kline, who updated the Bel Air Board of Town Commissioners at its Aug. 10 work session on the project. Funding for the updates will come from the town, county and state, he said. The project will cost approximately $150,000, Kline said, with funding from these sources: $75,000 from the state; $25,000 from Harford County; and $50,000 from the town of Be lAir. On Wednesday, the Maryland Board of Public Works authorized $75,000 for the Rockfield Park playground renovations through Program Open Space, an initiative overseen by the Maryland Department of Parks and Recreation. The aim is to "replace outdated playground equipment with new equipment that meets current accessibility and safety standards," according to the public works project description.
