SAN MATEO, CA — A Peninsula animal shelter rescued 10 baby ducklings from a storm drain in San Mateo on Monday after a resident called reporting a mother duck pacing near a storm grate.
Staff from the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA arrived on Ramblewood Way in San Mateo to scoop up the 10 ducklings and bring them to safety in a rescue that took 15 minutes.
The resident could hear the baby ducklings trapped underneath the grate, according to Buffy Tarbox, the communications manager for Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.
The animal shelter's Wildlife Care Center rehabilitates between 1,200 and 1,400 animals each year, according to a news release.
Tarbox said that the mother duck stayed nearby throughout the rescue. The ducklings were relocated to an area away from the drain and the mother then led her babies to a nearby park.
