Woodland, CA - During its regular meeting on Tuesday (August 10), the Yolo County Board of Education (YCOE) announced a vacancy on its five-member board due to the resignation of Trustee Jerry Jimenez, who represents Trustee Area 4. In an email to County Superintendent Garth Lewis on July 29, 2021, Jimenez, a Davis resident, announced he had accepted an offer of employment with the Woodland Joint Unified School District. Employees of a school district within the County Board's jurisdiction are not permitted to serve per the state's Education Code. He filed his resignation effective immediately. Jimenez is in his first term on the Board. He was elected to the Yolo County Board of Education in November 2020, after he ran unopposed for the Trustee Area 4 position. The term was scheduled to end in December 2024. Area 4 covers portions of North Davis (east of Highway 113 and north of Covell Boulevard), most of East Davis and all of South Davis, as well as a swath of land to the east of Mace Boulevard to the south of town. After a brief discussion, the Board determined the vacancy would be filled by appointment. The application to apply for the open seat is available online at www.ycoe.org or in-person at the YCOE office during regular business hours. Applications must be received by email, in-person, or postal service by 12:00 p.m. on September 7, 2021. Interested persons are encouraged to apply for the vacant position and will be eligible to be provisionally appointed to the Board as long as they are 18 years of age or older, a citizen of California, a resident of Trustee Area 4, a registered voter, and free of any disqualification from holding civil office. A provisional appointment must be made within 60 days of Jimenez's written notice of resignation. Thus, the Board must make a provisional appointment by September 27. During its next regularly scheduled meeting on September 14, the Board will meet in an open session to review the received applications and interview the candidates. Candidates should make themselves available for this meeting. The appointment will become effective upon the Board of Education's approval during the meeting. During the initial 10 days after the appointment, the Board must notify the community of the provisional appointment, including the name of the new Board member. The appointment will become final in 30 days unless a petition is filed with the Yolo County Superintendent of Schools requesting an election, in which case a special election will be called to fill the vacancy. After the appointment becomes final, the Board member will serve until December 2024, at which time he or she may run for election for a new four-year term in Trustee Area 4. The Yolo County Board of Education makes decisions regarding the Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE), including approving the annual county office budget and acting as the appeals board for student expulsions, inter-district transfers and charter school petitions. The Board also encourages the involvement of families and communities and is a vehicle for citizen access to communication about YCOE programs and services. Other members on the Board are President Matt Taylor, representing Area 1; Vice President Melissa Moreno, representing Area 2; Tico Zendejas, representing Area 3; and Carol Souza Cole, representing Area 5. Information about the vacancy on the Board of Education can be located on the Yolo County Office of Education webpage at www.ycoe.org.
