Culver City Crossroads August 9, 2021 The surge in hospitalizations due to the coronavirus slowed down in Los Angeles County on August 8, 2021, increasing by just four patients to 1,437, with 333 of those people in intensive care. These figures were made public one day after Los Angeles County Health officials reported 4,283 new cases of COVID-19 and 13 additional deaths, due to both continued high rates of transmission and significant increases in testing. It was the highest number of cases reported in one day in more than six months. In a bit of good news, however, the August 7th test positivity rate was 4.7%, down from 5.3% Friday and previous week's rate of 6.3%. As of Aug. 3, California was ranked 12th in the nation for the largest increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations. Daily hospitalization rates have increased by 83% over the last two weeks according to New York Times data. The decrease over the weekend portends that more people are taking the needed precautions, and that the curve maybe heading down once again. More vaccinations are making the light at the end of the tunnel shine a little more brightly; while the delta variant spreads, the United States on Monday reached its goal of having 70 percent of eligible adults at least partly vaccinated against the coronavirus. Currently, 165.1 million eligible Americans are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
