Solano County Fairgrounds Board To Ban Future Gun Shows

SOLANO COUNTY, CA — Gun shows at the Solano County Fairgrounds will be a thing of the past starting next year. The fair's board voted Monday to officially ban them. The move is said to have been prompted by Vallejo's high weapons-related crime rate. Lee Williams was the only board member to vote against the band, the Times-Herald reported. According to Williams, while gun violence is a problem, banning gun shows at the fairgrounds isn't the answer. The solution to the problem is education, he said. "A lot of the gun violence you're seeing is due to the drug level going on in our communities. I see the professionalism at these gun shows and everything is on the up and up," Williams told the Times-Herald. The board will still honor signed contracts for upcoming Code of the West gun shows on Oct. 9-10 and Dec. 4-5, according to the newspaper. Code of the West has hosted gun shows at the Solano County Fairgrounds for more than 20 years. "People that are against gun shows tend to base their decisions off of misinformation and are not educated about the industry," Jason Smith of Code of the West told the Times-Herald. Meanwhile, besides the four board members who approved the ban, Solano County Supervisor Erin Hannigan, state Sen. Bill Dodd and Vallejo Mayor Robert McConnell also supported the board's actions to stop future gun shows after this year. Read the full story at the Times-Herald.
