As our 8th year of creating screams we have gotten too big for our old venue and we are getting out into the cold cruel world and we are here to raise havoc. We are here to make a mark in the Orange County Haunted Attractions Community. To get information out accurately we have put together what we are looking for and what to expect when you are here. The Introduction: 1. Welcome to our Family 2. Auditions: What to expect and When 3. Scare actors are Not all the same 4. What we will be doing in the audition phase 5. Tips to making it to the top of the Scream Meter 6. FAQ 1. Welcome to the Family We have been doing this for 7 years now, mostly with family, friends, and neighbors. Everyone was a volunteer. This year we are bigger, scarier and opening more nights and longer hours so we need to welcome in a bunch of you mind twisting actors into our family. We are looking for some Key Characters and many other supporting roles which really are just as important as the Key roles, as without one the other is just another character. We are here to have fun and give our community a great show and leave them grasping for their phones to be the first on social media to say they were at the Scariest Sanitarium in Orange County. 2. Auditions: What to expect and When Mark your Calendars: August 28, 2021 Starts at 6 pm Sharp Location: 1025 Westminster Mall, Westminster, CA. Across from Hollister in unit 1069A Bring a chair if you want to sit down. Number of Actors needed: This year we will be paying actors. Each night we will need 40-45 actors and 4-10 crew members. We will need about 120 actors to rotate though the different nights as they can work. You don’t have to have experience to come out and have fun acting, bring a friend or two and have fun. Audition expectations: Mostly improv and games, we want to see your strengths so we can put you in a spot that best works for you. Learn what we are expecting from you: We will be giving you our plans on how things will run, our policies for working and after party and while on property. 3. Scare Actors are NOT all the same There are several different types of scare actors, Some are Loud while others use there creepiness and are very quiet, others like to get in your face and some like to lurk in the darkness of your mind and suddenly surprise you. There is a place for you, Don’t be afraid to let us know what you think are your strengths. Also you may surprise yourself to find once you put a costume on, you become a different more terrifying monster. We also have a bungee position which we will need several actors to train on and take turns as it is a physically challenging position. We also have the non-acting areas to fill, dealing with tickets, release waivers, Queue line actors, crowd control, security just to mention a few. If this is more your style let us know, these positions are just as important. For non-acting positions please send contact info to [email protected] See Below. There is also a need for people that can take on multiple characters in one night, these are usually someone which is a more seasoned actor. They will take the places of many of the other actors giving them breaks, usually in a fairly nondescript costume so they can fit in anywhere. 4. What will we be doing in the audition phase: a) Filling out the application, you do want to get paid right? Please get a package and begin filling it out once you arrive. If you are under 18 please bring in a work permit from school or your parents and yes we will be calling them. b) Let’s face it, this is not a normal day job and you might not really know what you’re getting involved with. That’s what this time is for. We like to break down the event, our policies, and make sure you have a good idea of what you should expect out of this experience. c) We will be watching you and taking notes. There will be several acting games we play where we may break down into smaller groups and give you a task and see how you respond. Try to see where you fit in the best. Also talk to you and seeing where YOU see yourself fitting in. d) Closing Meeting, We will be collecting any paperwork not completed earlier, answer questions you may have, verify ages on the younger ones and get work/parental releases. Let us know if you prefer make-up or masks, if you have any allergies we need to know about. There will be individual time for the more sensitive information you need to share. 5. Tips to making it to the top of the Scream Meter and getting our attention a) Be early and be prepared: This may sound strange to some, but, being on time and ready to take on tasks right away is huge. Let’s start off right, every night you are scheduled to work you will need costumes and make-up or masks. If you are late, we will have problems getting everyone ready and in position to start on time. b) Be Enthusiastic, Bold, Energetic, and Confident. Your energy will rub off on others, use it. If you are going to fail, Fail BIG, then take whatever mistake that YOU thought you made and act like it was meant to be that way. Chances are they won’t even have a clue it was a mistake. If the mistake is pain obvious, make a joke out of it and move on. This is supposed to be fun. c) Stay in Character: When in games and practice scenes we want you to stay in character, even when we throw you a curve ball. The ability to think on your feet and improvise is key to vocal rolls inside and outside the haunt. Being helpful while in character can be difficult for some. d) Don’t be afraid to overact, In many cases people think they are being loud and making giant movements, in the grocery store that may be, but in a haunt, you can’t be a mean scary monster if they can’t hear you or see your movements. Exaggerate your arm and leg movements, facial expressions etc. e) Don’t try to steal the show, make your fellow monsters bigger and scarier by being the sub. Help their scare scene and in turn they will help yours. Be a team player, because in the end we all want this to be a huge success every night. 6. FAQ a) How old do I need to be? As an actor you have to be 16+ with a work permit and/or parents’ permission. To work as other staff, ticketing, security, crowd control you must be 18. b) Does HBM do background checks? YES! Everyone will have a background check done on them, this is for the safety of our guests. If you have an issue and do not let us know about it, we will automatically dismiss your application. c) What if I have a felony? Most likely we will not be able to hire you. There are a few cases that fall in the grey area, talk to us in private if you think your situation may warrant another look. d) What if I can’t work every night we are open? This is expected, We plan on being open 22 nights in October. Please see attached calendar to see open dates. e) What if I didn’t make the auditions or get picked up as a paid actor? Volunteers are golden, There are many places we can still use you. Queue line actors, roaming actors, and other areas that may have a night of staffing issues. Also as a fill in if people have a personal emergency. f) What if I don’t want to act but still want to help? We need other staff members for ticketing, security, and other customer service positions. Send us an email at [email protected] and put YOUR NAME and CUSTOMER SERVICE POSITION in the subject line along with all your contact info and we will reach out to your as soon as we can. g) What if I already have a costume I like to wear? Bring in a picture of you in your costume, if we can find a place in our haunt for it and you fit that spot we will absolutely let you wear it. The costumes we have are the clothing we were able to accumulate over the years or in off season, They will not fit like your own clothes. So feel free to make your own. Costumes made by acting staff will have to be okay’d by the Casting or Costume department head. h) Will I get free tickets for my family and friends?
