Description

The Conscientious Care Team workshop was developed as an intervention to support students of the clinical profession The Conscientious Care Team workshop was developed as an intervention to support students of the clinical professions (e.g., physicians, public health students, pharmacists, nurses) and social services (case managers, social workers, etc.) in identifying the historical and social trends of HIV/AIDS and other health disparities and to support the needs of marginalized groups, including communities of color, the LGBTQ community, and poor families. The workshop also engages participants in activities that help them to identify their biases and ways they enact stigma when working with vulnerable communities who may be experiencing the compounded effects of racism, poverty, violence, sexism, homophobia/transphobia, etc. The workshop walks participants through exercises that build self-awareness and cultural competence; as they unpack the social/structural determinants of health and how racism and other “isms” are constructed in medical education and health care, they begin to recognize how their beliefs and values can impede their relationships with their patients / clients. The session addresses the following themes: The National Black Leadership Commission on Health (NBLCH), formerly known as NBLCA, is a 501c3 not for profit organization with a mission to champion the promotion of health and prevention of diseases to reduce disparities and achieve equity within the black community.
