Join Mott Street Girls and Run for Chinatown for a 5K history tour through the streets of Chinatown NYC on the morning of August 21, 2021! The “History Run for Chinatown 5K” is created by Mott Street Girls and Run for Chinatown. Join us on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 9:00AM to experience the rich history of Chinatown, including the dark origins of the neighborhood, stories of assimilation and sacrifice, and challenges that Chinese-Americans continue to face in pursuit of the American Dream as we run through the neighborhood stopping at highlighted sights. Ticket proceeds go toward Apex for Youth, a non-profit organization that delivers possibilities to under served Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC. Who: The run is led by Anna and Chloe of Mott Street Girls and and Leland and Run Coach Kai of Run for Chinatown. What: The 5K run begins with a quick dynamic warm-up followed by a 5K (3.1 miles) run and ends with a static stretch. This event will last about an hour and 15 minutes. We go at an average pace of 10-minute miles, and stop at various significant spots on the tour. We also stop for traffic lights and big intersections. All levels are welcome to join the run! Cheers, Mott Street Girls and Run for Chinatown The HostsMott Street Girls Anna and Chloe are second-generation Chinese Americans who met through tour guide training at a local museum. Their mission is to make Chinese American history and culture more accessible to the public. By hosting Chinatown walking tours, creating educational social media content, and partnering with community organizations, they strive to preserve Chinatown’s rich cultural heritage, bring business to the neighborhood, and share the stories of our community. Run for Chinatown Run for Chinatown was born out of a series of running challenges to raise funds and awareness for the Manhattan Chinatown community. Now, we are a group whose mission is to promote running in Chinatown and to challenge our physical and mental limits through the sport. The BeneficiaryApex for Youth Apex for Youth is a non-profit organization that delivers possibilities to Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC. They recruit working professionals to volunteer and become positive role models who inspire youth to expand their horizons and envision what is possible for their lives. Through mentoring and educational programs that serve students from 1st to 12th grade, Apex volunteers guide and support youth to become confident, be ready for college and give back to the community. FAQsIs this a race? No, this is a fun run, runners and non-runners of all levels are welcomed. We will be making stops along the route to talk and take photos. Streets will not be closed for the event and we will stop for traffic lights. Where do we start and end the run? We will start and end the run at Eggloo located at 60 Mulberry St in Manhattan. How long is the run? The run is approximately 5 kilometers or 3.1 miles and will includes stops to talk about the site and for photos. The run will take about an hour and 15 minutes to complete. How fast do we run? We go at an average pace of 10-minute miles, and also stop for photos and learning about the art along the way. We also stop for traffic lights as the streets will not be closed for this run. I am a beginner. Can I still join? Yes! You just have to be able to run 3.1 miles, with a few stops/breaks along the way. What are the covid-19 precautions? All Mott Street Girls and Run for Chinatown staff are fully vaccinated against covid-19. All runners must wear a mask at the starting and endpoint of the run and masks are mandatory in any crowded areas we may pass during the run. The total number of runners will be limited and we encourage everyone to stay socially distanced when possible during the run. Are kids or dogs allowed? Yes! Kids under 12 are free and dogs are free. Dogs must be up to date on all vaccinations, have no aggression issues, and be used to running 5K in the city. Dogs are not permitted inside the restaurant. Kids and teens ages 16 and under must be accompanied by a legal guardian. What is the event hashtag? Feel free to follow and tag us - @MottStreetGirls , @RunforChinatown, and @RunCoachKai and use hashtag #HistoryRunforChinatown in your photos! Will there be a bag drop? Yes, there will be a bag drop available but we are not liable for any lost or broken items and recommend taking your valuables on the run or leaving them at home. Will there be a restroom? Yes, there will be a restroom at the start and end at Eggloo.
