Hike a 1.5 mile loop through the redwood forest of Joaquin Miller Park and Roberts Regional Recreation Area. Learn how sea captains in the mid-1800s used the tallest trees to navigate away from treacherous Blossom Rock. Meet the forester whose sleuthing resulted in a state landmark designation. Conclude with an optional bring-your-own lunch picnic.

Location: To find the site, take Skyline Boulevard northeast from the intersection with Joaquin Miller Road about one-half mile to the entrance to Roberts Regional Recreation area. Instructions for people who sign up: Meet by 10 a.m. at the Madrone Picnic Site in Roberts Regional Recreation Area. The East Bay Regional Park District charges $5 per car to park in the Roberts lot near their swim center. Carpooling is recommended. In order to obtain a convenient parking space, early arrival is recommended. This tour involves a 1.5 mile hike, beginning and ending at the Madrone Picnic site. Participants are welcome to bring a picnic lunch. Ice chests will be provided at the site, where a volunteer will wait for everyone to return. Forester John Nicoles will present a lecture and demonstration after the hike.
