BROOKFIELD, WI — The Brookfield Board of Public Works will meet Tuesday to decide whether to approve a contract between the city and a new waste management service. At issue is a proposed contract with Green for Life for the city's garbage collection and disposal services, according to the agenda. The board is likely to approve the plan, Alderman Scott Berg told Patch. "Usually by the time it's done with the committee, it's mostly ironed out," he said. "But it's still a process." If the board approves the contract, it will move to the Common Council for final approval at its meeting on Aug. 17, Berg said. The contract would continue "up-the-drive" services, under which garbage and recyclables are taken from residents' driveways instead of from the curb, Alderman Mike Hallquist told Patch. "We need to have a waste collection provider by the new year, but it's a missed opportunity for the city to save millions of dollars that would have been savings in the form of property tax or been able to fund other services," Hallquist said. He added that he still supported the proposed contract. The board planned to discuss yard waste disposal in the future once the contract is settled, Hallquist said. Yard waste discussions were put off because they might increase expenses, he said. The city has contracted with Waste Management for trash pickup after the company acquired previous city contractor Advanced Disposal in 2020.
