Here are the top three stories in Laurel today: The four-month reconstruction of Laurel Park's dirt surface officially ended Tuesday morning when horses once again began training over the track. Horses had been training at Pimlico and Timonium while the track was being renovated. Racing returns to Laurel in September. (WBAL Radio)Governor Larry Hogan announced on August 10 that Project Restore, the State of Maryland's $25 million economic recovery initiative to support small businesses and revitalize vacant retail and commercial spaces, will begin accepting applications in early September. Project Restore will provide new or expanding businesses with rental grants and sales tax relief rebates to help offset startup and operating costs during their first year. (Maryland.gov)The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) announced on August 2 a $1.2 million commitment to address food insecurity issues in the communities across the state which are served by the organization's 13 hospitals. UMMS is working with the Maryland Food Bank, the Capital Area Food Bank, Moveable Feast and Meals on Wheels to provide directed grants and other resources to the most vulnerable individuals in targeted areas and help those who are hungry in our communities by supplying food and prepared meals.
