Secaucus Police, K9 Pursued Man Through North End Of Town

SECAUCUS, NJ — Update: As of 2 p.m., the shelter in place has been lifted. There was a man in possession of a gun at the Meadowlands Plaza Hotel, said Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller. He left the gun and fled on foot to the Secaucus North End; police presume he was unarmed while running through the North End. Secaucus' police officers and the department's police canine Strobe combed the North End for him, but the K-9 lost the man's scent and he has not been apprehended, said Chief Miller. Residents reported seeing police officers and a dog in the area, and residents were told to stay inside their homes. The handgun, however, was recovered. Secaucus Police are continuing to investigate. Miller stressed the schools were in a shelter in place, not a lockdown. Sheltering in place is similar to lockdown in that the occupants are told to remain indoors. There is police activity in the north end of Secaucus, specifically from Maple Street to Trolley Park, said Secaucus Mayor Mike Gonnelli in an alert as of 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. Residents in that area, and on Paulanne Terrace, are being told to stay inside their homes and not go outside. Campers in the Secaucus summer day camp were also asked to shelter in place, but all campers are safe, said the town. Residents are also reporting seeing police K-9s go into the backyards of homes in that area. "We expect the shelter in place to be lifted in the near future. Thank you," said Gonnelli.
