Description

CHICAGO — A newborn baby boy was found abandoned inside a dresser drawer in an alley on the Northwest Side Tuesday morning, Chicago police said. A woman who stopped to look at the dresser discovered the baby at around 8:13 a.m. in the 2300 block of North Oak Park Avenue. She told ABC7 reporters he was wrapped in a rosary. The baby was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital, officials said. While the child is listed in good condition, an Illinois law aims to prevent parents from leaving an infant in a place where they may come to harm. The Safe Haven Law, passed in 2001, allows parents up to 30 days to physically hand a baby into the arms of a staff member at a police station, firehouse or medical facility — no questions asked. Advances in genetic technology have made it possible to track the parents of abandoned children in some cases, experts said after a 2003 cold case of the murder of two twin babies was solved.
