Description

Recognizing the mental health benefits of time in nature, Project ABLE Veterans will be hosting a Kayaking 101 intro course to paddling. Kayaking 101 is an introduction to Kayaking focusing on skills needed for any type of kayak including but not limited to touring kayaks, sit-on-tops, recreational, folding and inflatable. You'll learn kayak nomenclature, stretches, and how to adjust your outfitting to suit your body. Topics include outfitting, basic terminology, land & water etiquette, launching and landing, boat safety, basic paddling, potential hazards, and paddling environment. The Kayak 101 class will focus on the basics. On land, we will discuss paddling safely, local destinations and equipment. On the water, we introduce the basic paddle strokes needed to efficiently move a kayak through the water. Participants will learn how to be efficient in their strokes, understand and work with their boat's stability. Classes will include gear like kayaks, life vests, paddles, and safety whistles. Attendees will need to bring their own of the following but can contact the instructor for support in acquiring needed items. Participants can have the option of taking their skills down river or staying in the immediate area to paddle after the class.
