Description

Hey there folks, I’m a keyboard player and songwriter putting together a band primarily for a one-off concert in our backyard (perhaps as part of Somerville’s rescheduled porchfest, which I believe is October 2nd). I’m looking primarily for bass and guitar. I have a likely drummer but it is not set in stone yet, so feel free to inquire. There is also an opportunity for vocalists or other instrumentalists (more below). The plan is to do two sets, half fun covers and half drawing from my own back catalog of originals which span several decades. I used to perform in local original bands Fragile Alex, Chalk Circle, an a cappella group, and the funk/disco cover band Booty Vortex, among others. Stylistically, the originals draw on folk, rock, pop, and jazz—particularly 70s sounds. Influences include Billy Joel, Steely Dan, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, Ben Folds, James Taylor, and 50s era jazz. Samples are available, email for link. Covers are mostly just fun or cheesy tunes that will make the audience either laugh or groove. Partial list: Accentuate the Positive (Dr. John version), Stranded in a Limousine (Paul Simon), Part of the Plan (Dan Fogelberg), a couple Billy Joel deep cuts, a few old TV theme songs (Perfect Strangers), and more. There will be a horn section for about five of the songs (I think I have those folks lined up already, but it's not 100%, so feel free to inquire if you are a horn player). Depending on who responds to this, I would be very willing to add songs that feature particular instruments (flute, violin, percussion, banjo, clarinet, ???). There are also definitely opportunities for singing lead on some tunes and for adding harmonies. So there is ample room for musical cameos if you only want to participate on one or two songs. Feel free to throw out ideas. The goal would be to do weekly rehearsals with the core band to learn the songs and at least a couple of rehearsals with any other folks leading up to the show. If things go well and people want to keep it rolling, I’d definitely consider morphing it into something more ongoing. Thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you! --Mo
