Description

Join Chronically Strong for a time of rememberance and tribute to those whom have lost their lives to suicide or overdose. Join us here at Chronically Strong for an evening dedicated to honoring the memory of those we love that have lost their lives to suicide or drug overdose during a candlelit ceremony at Italian Lake in Harrisburg. This is a FREE event open to the public to provide a place to be a voice for those no longer with us. Where we can help remove the stigma around suicide and drug overdose, and help our community and families heal through tragedy while shining a light in the dark places. Shame lives in the places that are hidden. Mental illness, addiction, trauma—all of these things get better when we bring them into the open in a safe, supportive space. Talking about them lets us shed the shame and realize that we are not alone in these struggles. In order to participate fully in this event, we ask that you come prepared with an open heart and attitude of support, along with a few items. To Bring: 1) A piece of cardboard with the name of the person you lost, their life dates, and (only if you are comfortable) either the word "Suicide" or "Overdose" to help our community understand a small part of your loved one's story. Make sure to use a dark Sharpie marker and use thick letters and numbers so that these can be easily viewed. A limited amount of poster board will be provided if you don't have access to, or time, to bring a cardboard sign. 2) If you would like to bring a photo of your loved one, or attach their picture to your board, please do so. 3) If you would like to wear a shirt with either a positive message or something that has your loved one's name, please feel free to. At the Event: We will have some music playing. There will be a introduction from our President, Gina Casner, about Chronically Strong and about how we began. You will also hear from our Community Awareness Director, Darla Johnson, as she shares about her late sister, Dawn along with some encouragement. As a community we will circle Italian Lake as we hold our signs in memory of our loved one and light a candle, one by one, in memory of those we have lost but not forgotten. Light refreshments and candles will be provided. Donations are appreciated but not required. Also, there will be signs with positive messages available to take with you for a donation. *************************************************************************** At Chronically Strong we believe that individuals coping with mental illness become stronger when their friends and family are supported. We see a world where mental illness is destigmatized, and where individuals find healing and a sense of community. At Chronically Strong we are helping point individuals and families in crisis to resources. We are educating community leaders, organizations, and individuals on mental health, suicide prevention, and shaping change through the language we use to describe mental illness and those whom are coping with mental illness. We are doing advocacy work and supporting legislative reform that enhances the community’s ability to support those coping with mental illness. Most of all, at Chronically Strong, we offer a voice to those searching for their own. We hold space for the individuals, friends, and families coping with mental illness. We are a light shining to help our community find their way out of the darkness. We want to help you grow #strongereveryday. We want you to know that you matter and we are glad you are here.
