Virtual Lecture to Explore Katharine Hepburn as Yankee FolkloreAugust 17, 2021 OLD SAYBROOK, CT - The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, "the Kate", presents a free virtual lecture with Professor Stephen Gencarella on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 7 pm on the Kate's YouTube channel. Katharine Hepburn: Legend, Heroine, and Yankee Eccentric explores Hepburn's status as a local community legend, her portrayal of heroic figures, and her unique eccentricities. Professor Gencarella will discuss Hepburn's unrepentant principles and brilliance as a comedic heroine on stage and in films. Stephen Olbrys Gencarella is a professor of folklore at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and the resident folklorist for the Connecticut River Museum in Essex, CT. He is currently finishing a collection of essays on eccentrics in New England for Globe Pequot Press and a book on the folklore of the Moodus noises. He is an officer for the Eastern Regional Tourism District and has been a Visiting Professor at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. This program accompanies the Kate's virtual exhibit "Katharine Hepburn: Unintentional Trailblazer" that is currently streaming on the Kate's YouTube channel. It is comprised of three modules: "Bringing Up Kate," which explores her close-knit family and the influence of her high-achieving and progressive parents, as well as her ties to Old Saybrook. "Live Up to Your Potential" is a look into her drive and determination to be a hit as an actress and the longevity of her career. And "Image is Everything" delves into her fashion style and the careful crafting of her public persona. The virtual exhibit and lecture are supported by a grant from Connecticut Humanities.
