COLUMBIA, MD — When baby Karter arrived in the world, he was diagnosed at birth with Alagille Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the liver, heart, eyes, blood vessels, kidneys and skeleton. A person with this syndrome has fewer than the normal number of small bile ducts inside the liver. In March 2021, baby Karter's health began to decline and he was immediately admitted to John Hopkins Children's Hospital in Baltimore. At that time, he was then diagnosed with liver failure and severe heart defects, but he couldn't have a liver transplant until his heart defects were addressed. So Baby Karter underwent heart surgery in June and has spent the summer recovering. He and his family, single mom Breonna, have been preparing for his upcoming liver transplant. Karter's aunt, Vanessa Scott, created a GoFundMe page to help Karter's family during this challenging time, especially since mom Breonna has had to take off an extensive amount of work, the medical bills are piling up, and there are additional expenses like hotel stays, gas and food. "Karter is the most loving, cheerful, affectionate and brave warrior we've ever seen," she wrote. Baby Karter's aunt, Vanessa Scott, said his heart surgery at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in California was a success. "We are overjoyed and thankful for all the prayers, love, and support. This little boy continues to amaze us all," she posted on the GoFundMe page. "Karter is back at Johns Hopkins Children's Hospital where he will continue receiving nutrition through a feeding tube, daily monitoring and an array of therapy. Karter's mom has been out of work for a few months by his bedside and has been tirelessly advocating for Karter to receive the best care."
