NORTHBROOK, IL — After nearly four months of declining numbers, Northbrook is continuing to trend in the wrong direction, with coronavirus cases on the rise. The number of new cases in Northbrook increased by 113 percent over the last two weeks, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health, a number slightly down from the prior 14 days (126 percent increase from July 19-Aug. 2). (Cook County Department of Public Health)In all, Northbrook has seen 3,412 confirmed COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic. There were 51 new cases reported last week, compared to 24 new cases for the week of July 26-Aug. 2. Since the first death was recorded on March 30, 2020, 118 Northbrook residents have died from the coronavirus. The last two deaths came on May 13. In Northbrook, 27,765 people have completed their vaccine series, which is 83.7 percent of the population. It marks an increase of 198 fully vaccinated people since Aug. 2, according to the CCDPH. There have been 257,200 coronavirus cases in Cook County (excluding Chicago, Evanston, Oak Park, Skokie, and Stickney Township) since the start of the pandemic, as of Monday. There have been 4,505 deaths. The community transmission level was upgraded to substantial from moderate in the last seven days, according to the Cook County health officials. For the week ending Aug. 6, Illinois saw 16,742 new coronavirus cases, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. In addition, 64 more Illinoisans have died from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus, and 1,200 are hospitalized, including 246 in intensive care and 121 on ventilators. More than 75 percent of Illinois adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, and more than 59 percent of Illinois adults are fully vaccinated, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While vaccinated individuals have reported some mostly mild breakthrough cases, almost all hospitalizations and deaths have been among the unvaccinated, health officials said. Two months after Illinois declared that masks are no longer needed "in most settings" for vaccinated people, surging coronavirus cases nationwide have prompted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to urge residents — even those who are vaccinated — to mask up indoors once more in areas with substantial and high transmission of COVID-19.
