NORTHFIELD, MN — Rice County is among the hot spots in the latest COVID-19 case surge affecting the nation. New cases are up by 655 percent in Rice County, according to the New York Times. There are now 18 confirmed cases among 100,000 people, and an average of 12 new cases every day. Rice County has a "high" level of community transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control. That is the CDC's highest category for case spread. The county is in the middle of the pack when it comes to vaccinations. A total of 52 percent of the entire population is fully vaccinated. Vaccine mandates in Northfield Both Northfield-based Carleton College and St. Olaf College are among the Minnesota colleges that will require students and staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 this fall.
