LAKEWOOD, OH — Mayor Meghan George is going on leave after giving birth to a baby girl over the weekend and Law Director Brian Corrigan will now serve as acting mayor. George and her partner Matt Hagan welcomed their daughter, Margaret Rose Hagan, to the world on Friday, according to George's Chief of Staff John Storey. "While she spends time on leave with her newborn, per the Lakewood City Charter, Law Director Brian Corrigan will function as acting mayor, and I will handle day-to-day operational matters. Mayor George will be in consistent contact with her staff to stay up-to-date on key issues and any urgent matters as they arise," Storey told Patch in an email. In mid-July, George informed Lakewood City Council that she was expecting her first child in early August. She plans to take the full 12 weeks of FMLA leave, though she intends to be available to staff and the community as much as possible, she said in an email to city council. "Being only the second female mayor, this is an exciting first for our community. I am proud to be an example to young women that you can be both focused on a career and family simultaneously," she said in an email communication with council. A previous version of this story said George's baby was born Saturday. She was actually born Friday.
