Description
Silver is NOT a Labrador color recognized by the AKC. There are only three recognized colors - black, chocolate, and yellow. Furthermore, they are not allowed in the ring.
A true Lab is boxy, square head, short legs, with an otter tail. Some call them English Labs, but they really are just a Lab that conforms to the AKC breed standard.
Beware of breeders who try and pass off the latest dog fad as a pure bred Lab. Their color is the result of a rare gene (dilute gene) that lightens the coat of a chocolate, and must be registered as a chocolate with the AKC.
To increase the frequency of this genetic rarity, these dogs are either inbred, which is not good (think British royal family), or they slip a little Weimaraner into the gene pool which makes them a mixed breed.
In any case, there are many reputable Lab breeders here in New England selling dogs with sound genetics.
