This is a full-time, limited duration position of 2 years from date of hire. The City has developed a team of skilled concrete workers for the construction, maintenance, repair and operation of the City's concrete assets (including but not limited to ADA ramps, curbs, bus pads, and sidewalks). The Public Utility Worker 2 (PUW 2) performs the primary job functions of the position as part of a collaborative, teamwork oriented group in the Transportation Division. This position is responsible for installing, maintaining ADA ramps, curbs, bus pads, and sidewalks When weather conditions prohibit concrete work,the PUW 2 is also responsible for removing irreparable road areas for excavation, preparing streets for overlays and slurry seals; patching, filling potholes, paving, crack sealing and sweeping. Other duties include; removing debris and illegally dumped garbage, maintaining City rights-of way; mowing, spraying, weeding and trimming trees; maintaining barricades, street signs, pavement markings and other traffic control devices and winter operations such as snow plowing, sanding and de-icing. Qualifications: Knowledge of: >Maintenance, construction, and repair methods and procedures used in assigned area of concrete and road maintenance. >Safety practices and procedures applicable to transportation activities. >Safe and effective operating practices of light and heavy equipment used in transportation activities. >Techniques of flagging and traffic control. >Computers and computer applications. Ability to: >Operate heavy equipment and power tools used in public works maintenance operations. >Work independently or as part of a crew. >Perform heavy manual work under confined and uncomfortable conditions, including adverse weather conditions. >Perform routine arithmetic calculations. >Communicate effectively and courteously with City employees and the public. >Understand and follow oral and written instructions. >Respond to emergencies on a 24 hour basis. >Ability to work in environments requiring the use of a respirator. >Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job. Minimum Qualifications: >Must be a high school graduate or have passed the GED test of equivalency. >Must possess a valid driver's license. >Must possess a good driving record (based on our driving matrix) >Must have no previous DOT drug testing violations. >Must understand instructions in English, both orally and in writing. >Must be at least 18 years of age by the date of the hire. >Must possess the physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. >Must be able to obtain Oregon Class A CDL within first 6 months of employment. >One year of concrete experience. Preference will be given to those with ADA ramp experience. Must also possess or be able to obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of accepting the position. If you currently possess a Class "A" Commercial Drivers License, please submit a 10 year employment history including positions in which you used your Class "A" CDL. Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will follow directions easily; be detail-oriented; show initiative; work harmoniously with coworkers and other public works crews; assess situations quickly and make sound decisions, which may change work tasks or priorities. The ability to use a computer to enter daily work data. The ideal candidate must also be able to communicate professionally and courteously with the public, explain equipment and procedures, answer questions and ask for citizens' cooperation. You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions: -A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury. -Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years. -Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one- year period. -Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
