RIVERHEAD, NY —A man was robbed, kicked, and punched in Riverhead Friday night — but a passing motorist came to his aid, police said. According to the Riverhead Police Department, the robbery took place at 11:23 p.m. on West Main Street and Griffing Avenue. The driver, who was at the intersection, reported seeing a man tackle the 35-year-old to the ground in the roadway, police said. Next, a second person approached and both began kicking and punching the man while he was on the ground, police said. The motorist turned his vehicle around to assist the man as the two fled north on Griffing Avenue, police said. The man who had been attacked said he'd been robbed of his money and sneakers, police said. The motorist called police to report the incident and waited with the man until help arrived, authorities said. A Riverhead Police Department K-9 officer then saw two people fleeing north on Griffing Avenue near Railroad Avenue; the two were stopped by the K-9 officer and identified as the pair that had robbed the man, police said. Francisco Pablo, 18, of Southampton, and a 17-year-old from Flanders were placed under arrest, charged with second-degree robbery, and transported to the Riverhead Police Department for processing, police said. The man was transported to the Peconic Bay Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released, police said.
