The facts speak for themselves: Los Angeles is the deadliest major US city for traffic collisions. (LA DOT)Traffic collisions are the #1 killer of children ages 4-14 in LA. (LA DOT)In LA, traffic collisions cause more deaths than gang violence. (LA DOT)LA has the highest percentage of hit and run crimes of any US city. 48% of all collisions in Los Angeles are hit and runs. (LAPD)In the last 12 months, in South Los Angeles nearly 500 people have lost their lives or were seriously injured due to traffic violence. (LAPD)In 2020 Los Angeles City saw a 26% decrease in traffic collisions but South Los Angeles saw a 23% increase in serious injuries and fatalities. (LAPD) Join South LA religious and civic leaders, community members, Faith for Safer Streets, and Streets Are For Everyone in remembering all whose lives were impacted by traffic violence in the last year. Join with faith-based leaders from across South Los Angeles in prayer for those whose lives have been lost due to traffic violence. Who is Hosting this Event? This event is created by Faith for Safer Streets, a coalition of South LA Faith Based and community leaders who want to see the streets of South LA safe for the community and are taking actions to do something about it. Faith for Safer Streets is has been created by Pastor Patricia Strong-Fargas of Mt Salem New-Wave Christian Fellowship Church and Damian Kevitt of Streets Are For Everyone. Event Agenda Held outside on the lawn at Figueroa St Elementry School along one of the most dangerous roads in all of Los Angeles. The event will open with stats and facts about traffic violence in South Los Angeles and the need for safer streets. Local civic leaders will speak, pledging their support of safer streets in South LA. Victims of South LA Traffic Violence will lead a walk down a pop-up memorial with nearly 500 flags, one for each person seriously injured or killed in South LA in the last year. Then South LA religious leaders of various faiths will lead the group with messages and prayer. Those present will be invited to be blessed for safe passage by the ministers present. Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE) aims to improve the quality of life for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers alike by reducing traffic caused fatalities to Zero. SAFE addresses the problem in a holistic fashion through direct education, broad awareness campaigns, partnerships, community outreach, policy and legislation, support for those impacted and other proven strategies. Working not only in the Los Angeles area but rapidly expanding to other metropolitan areas including (but not limited to) Sacramento, Orange County, Ventura County and Wisconsin, SAFE’s programs include: Media and social media campaigns to raise awareness Direct education of those on the streets and through schools. Partnering with like-minded non-profits and city and state officials to coordinate actions and bring about change. Support of sensible legislation and policy Broad Public Information Campaigns which address not only hit-and-run crimes but drunk, drugged and distracted driving as well. This includes: bus ads, billboards, media and social media. Support to those who have been affected by or been victims of traffic incidents.
