TAMPA, FL — The Florida Department of Transportation will hold a Back-To-School Safety Celebration at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the C. Blythe Andrews Jr. Public Library, 2607 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Tampa.
This event is to celebrate the completion of the new traffic signal and pedestrian crosswalk installation at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 26th Street.
Construction on this joint safety project by the FDOT and the city of Tampa began in late January and was accelerated to ensure completion in time for the first day of school, Aug. 10.
The intersection features a new traffic signal, enhanced crosswalks, pavement markings and pedestrian crossing buttons, which will provide safe crossings and enhance walkability to nearby schools as well as the C. Blythe Andrews Jr. Public Library.
Guest speakers include FDOT District 7 Secretary David Gwynn, Hillsborough County Commissioner Gwen Myers, state Rep. Dianne Hart, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, Tampa City Councilman Orlando Gudes, Les Miller, former Hillsborough County commissioner, College Hill/Belmont Heights Community Association President Cynthia Few and Director of Library Services Andrew Breidenbaugh.
