Press release from the City of San Antonio: Monday, August 2, 2021 CONTACT: Rudy Arispe (210) 207-8172 SAN ANTONIO (August 2, 2021) – The highly-transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19 is circulating in San Antonio, causing a significant increase in hospitalizations. Metro Health advises the community to get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect themselves and the community from the virus. To encourage vaccinations, Metro Health is commemorating National Immunization Awareness Month, which is observed annually during August. "The increase in cases and hospitalizations should be of concern to all of us, especially for those who are unvaccinated because of the risk of serious illness," Mayor Ron Nirenberg said. "You have the power to protect yourself, your family and your friends by getting vaccinated to be protected from COVID-19." Vaccinations are the driving factor that helped San Antonio see a major decrease in daily case numbers of people testing positive for COVID-19, and hospitalization numbers declining, Mayor Nirenberg added. However, because of the highly contagious Delta variant, people who are unvaccinated are at greater risk of being infected. Metro Health also reminds more than 120,000 people, who have not returned for their second vaccine dose, to complete their vaccine series. "It's never too late to get your second COVID-19 vaccine, and you don't have to return to the same location to get it done," Mayor Nirenberg said. "They are highly effective at preventing serious illness, hospitalization or complications from COVID-19." Parents are also asked to have their school-age children, 12 years and older, vaccinated as they prepare to return to in-person learning in August. "We want our students, teachers and staff protected from COVID-19, and our vaccines can help prevent infection and the virus from spreading," Mayor Nirenberg said. The City of San Antonio is concentrating its vaccine efforts on providing daily pop-up clinics throughout neighborhoods and at its drive-thru clinic at the Alamodome. A new Alamodome schedule will begin August 6 with operating hours from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. To ensure everyone who wants to receive a COVID-19 vaccine has access to get one, Metro Health is informing residents on weekly pop-up vaccination clinics. Below is a listing of upcoming pop-up clinic locations for the week of August 2-7. Please note that clinic dates and times are subject to change. Check the interactive map of COVID-19 pop-up clinics, www.covid19.sanantonio.gov, for the latest updates. All media must contact Metro Health before visiting a pop-up clinic.
