NEWPORT, RI — Seven Rhode Island beaches were closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels, the Department of Health said. Five of the beaches are in Newport, and one each in South Kingstown and Narragansett. The beaches are: YMCA Camp Fuller in South KingstownFort Adams State Park Beach in NewportKings Park Beach in NewportGooseberry Beach in NewportHazard's Beach in NewportSpouting Rock Beach in NewportScarborough State Beach South in Narragansett The spate of closures is likely due to heavy rain that fell across Rhode Island Wednesday night into Thursday, with some areas seeing more than three inches of rainfall. The Department of Health previously explained that high bacteria levels are most often caused by stormwater runoff. For the latest beach closure information, call the department's prerecorded beach line at 401-222-2751.
