Description

When Orland Park firefighter Lieutenant Dan Ritchie, his daughter Cate Ritchie and Cate's girlfriend Addie Oster decided to volunteer at the Treasure Chest Foundation, Colleen Kisel asked Lieutenant Dan Ritchie about the fire truck. Within minutes the Orland Park Fire Protection District fire truck made a quick stop at the Treasure Chest Foundation while on the way to the local grocery store. Treasure Chest Foundation Founder Colleen Kisel expressed her appreciation to the Orland Park Fire Protection District for ten years of support, "The Treasure Chest Foundation will always be especially grateful to the Orland Park Fire Protection District for supporting the kids we serve over the years. Thanks to the hard work of the department and the support of volunteers like firefighter Lieutenant Dan Ritchie children fighting cancer will continue to be rewarded with a toy for their bravery." The POTCF is a unique organization whose services impact more than 14,600 young cancer patients in 62 cancer treatment centers in 20 states across the nation and in the District of Columbia. Nowhere else in the nation does such a program exist. Colleen Kisel founded the organization in 1996 after her then seven-year-old son Martin had been diagnosed with leukemia in 1993. Ms. Kisel discovered that giving her son a toy after each procedure provided a calming distraction from his pain, noting that when children are diagnosed with cancer their world soon becomes filled with doctors, nurses, chemotherapy drugs, surgeries and seemingly endless painful procedures. Martin celebrated his 28th anniversary of remission from the disease in March of this year.
