NEW LOOK: Northport Civic Center Getting Much-Needed Makeover

NORTHPORT, AL — The Northport Civic Center will look a bit different to visitors as the contractor finishes giving the building a fresh coat of paint. The work is part of a wider push by the city to make improvements to the entire property. On Thursday, Red Oak Painting Co. could be seen working on the front of the building, after starting first on the back of the Northport Civic Center. Light poles on the property will also receive new coats of paint. Built in the 1960s, the City of Northport initially purchased the former McCrory Village property for $1 million in 1985. Before the building was given a new facade and converted into government offices and event space, it housed several businesses, including a grocery store, hardware store and a hair salon, among others. ALSO READ: How Northport Will Spend Its $4.8M From American Rescue Plan Council President Jeff Hogg said tentative plans following the painting will include landscape improvements, new awnings for the building's facade and curbing improvements. He also said the city will consider striping and/or paving the parking lot. As Patch reported last October, the city also received a $2,500 grant from the Alabama Power Foundation Gateway Program to cover the cost of new welcome signage on Lurleen B. Wallace Boulevard, with the goal of helping to promote the city's brand.
