About our guest speaker August Vernon: A 25-year veteran of public safety, August Vernon returned to the City /County Office of Emergency Management as the new Director in August 2018. Prior to that he spent 3 years as the Emergency Services Manager for Wake Forest University (WFU). August specializes in terrorism response, incident command/management, crisis management and mass violence/active shooter response. He brings with him extensive experience in emergency management planning activities such as designing and coordinating over 150 local and regional, multi-agency tabletop exercises, disaster drills and full scale exercises. Has also been involved in designing and assisting with numerous crisis management and response planning efforts at the local and regional level. August served for four years in the United States Army as a Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Operations Specialist from 1991 to 1995. After the Army, he served as a career firefighter and fire service instructor for several years. August then accepted a position as the Operations Officer for the Forsyth County Office of Emergency Management where he served for 13 years. August also served one year in Iraq as a security contractor conducting high-threat convoy security and route clearance operations. In his public safety career August has responded to numerous events such as a public school campus shooting, university campus shooting, workplace violence shooting, plane crashes, multi-alarm fires, meth labs, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, train incidents, hazmat incidents, structural collapses, missing person searches, major crime scenes, multi-alarm fires, mass casualty incidents, bomb threats, suspicious packages, suspicious powders, large protests, major utility disruptions and COVID-19. He has also conducted planning for and worked numerous large planned events such as the Democratic National Convention (DNC), Guns and Roses Concert, Billy Joel Concert, Winston-Salem Airshow, Carolina Classic Fair, multiple Presidential Visits, high-profile VIP visits, high-profile funerals, large concerts, ACC sporting events, large protests and the 2000 Presidential Debate. Over the course of his career, he has taught more than 800 public safety classes, lectured in over 7 different states, authored/co-authored two books and nationally published more than 50 public safety articles.
