We New Englanders know the value of good weather. Because our winters can be so harsh and our summers so relatively short, we know how to take advantage of the good weather – and the beautiful area where we live – while we can. And despite a pretty wet few weeks, there have been plenty of opportunities to get outside and soak up the sun this summer. It's important, though, to be prepared to enjoy the summer weather safely. A little bit of prevention (and preparation) can make sure that a day in the sun stays fun. Whether it's knowing basic first aid skills to be able to respond in an emergency, learning to recognize dangers in recreational activities, or simply putting together basic emergency supplies, there are things you can do to ensure that your summer fun stays safe and enjoyable. Summer fun often means lots of physical activity, which can be physically taxing, especially when it's hot. It also comes the potential for injuries, accidents, or unforeseen medical problems. One way to reduce the risk that these events pose is to be trained in First Aid and CPR. The presence of someone trained in First Aid during an emergency can significantly reduce the severity of the event, potentially saving a life or avoiding serious injury. Whether responding to a broken arm, resuscitating a drowning victim, or recognizing the signs of a heart attack or stroke, a person with First Aid/CPR training can provide life-saving care in the crucial first few moments of an emergency. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to get trained in First Aid and CPR. Organizations like the Red Cross, the American Heart Association, and Heart Savers offer a number of online and in-person classes that can help you be prepared in case of an emergency. Many employers also offer First Aid & CPR training to employees through these and similar organizations, so check to see if your employer offers such classes or would be willing to provide them. When it gets hot, many of us make a beeline straight for the water, and Norfolk County has plenty of water to keep us cool, with over 100 lakes and ponds and an extensive coastline. Swimming and water sports are a great way to cool off on a hot summer day, but it's important to do so safely and know your limits. The DCR provides free swimming lessons across the Commonwealth, and organizations such as the Red Cross, Boys & Girls Clubs, and the YMCA also offer swimming classes for both children and adults. Additionally, your town may offer free or discounted swimming lessons through its Parks and Recreation Department. Another danger in the summer months is children or pets left inside cars. It takes only minutes for an un-air conditioned car with its windows rolled up to reach life-threateningly hot internal temperatures as the heat gets trapped inside the greenhouse-like interior. Not only is it dangerous, but in Massachusetts, it's illegal to leave a child or animal inside a car during extreme heat (or cold). It's also important that while on your summer adventures to have a well-stocked first aid kit. First aid kits can be an important first line of defense to prevent minor injuries from turning into major ones. You can either purchase a first aid kit or put together your own (the Red Cross has helpful instructions on its website, RedCross.org). If you already have a kit, it's worth checking to make sure that all the supplies are still fully stocked and unexpired. Whatever way you choose to get out and enjoy our beautiful county, I wish a safe and relaxing summer. Stay safe and have fun!
