CONNECTICUT — The number of coronavirus cases — and the number of those cases admitted to area hospitals — both rose sharply on Friday. Another 731 Connecticut residents have come down with COVID-19 according to the state Department of Public Health. That brings the total number of cases in the state to 358,076. Those 731 infections were among the 20,772 tested, which brings the daily positivity rate for the virus to 3.52 percent, the highest since April 13. The virus filled another 19 beds overnight, raising the number of Connecticut residents hospitalized with COVID-19 to 174, the highest since May 13. Most of the cases are currently hospitalized in New Haven, Hartford and Fairfield Counties. Three new COVID-19-associated deaths were reported in the past week, bringing the latest tally to 8,296 for the pandemic. Despite the higher transmissibility of the coronavirus delta variant, the death toll in the state has flattened nationwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a sharp drop-off in COVID-19-associated deaths nationwide in the last week of July after a two-week upswing just prior.
