Perhaps at one time in the past, liberalism might have been defined as you claim. The liberal of today has nothing in common with the description you gave in your last sentence.
It is more accurately described by the first part of your post. A condition born of greed, envy, ignorance and perversion. A sickness of mind and soul, incurable and completely without the spark of humanity.
