FRAMINGHAM, MA — Mayor Yvonne Spicer picked up the endorsement of a major pro-choice group this week along with two other women running for mayor in Massachusetts in 2021. The group EMILY's List handed out endorsements to Spicer, Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and Vilma Martinez-Dominguez, who is running for mayor of Lawrence, Politico reported Thursday. The endorsement bolsters Spicer's cred among Democrats, but will also likely come with a donation from the group's political action committee. The EMILY's List PAC disbursed about $50 million to endorsed state, federal and local candidates in 2020, according to Federal Election Commission filings. In June alone, the group gave out more than $2.7 million to Democratic candidates across the U.S. Spicer is facing a challenge in 2021 from former selectman and city councilor Charlie Sisitsky and Brazilian Immigrants Family of America CEO Carlos Valadares. The field will be pared down to two candidates following the Sept. 14 primary election. Sisitsky and Spicer have been raising large sums of money this summer, but Spicer pulled ahead of him in July. She pulled in about $13,000 in donations last month, bringing her war chest to over $42,000. Sisitsky raised about $7,000 with a total of close to $34,000 on hand, according to state records.
