Thomas Point Featured On Stamp, Will Be Honored In Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The U.S. Postal Service will feature Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse on one of its forever stamps. The Chesapeake Bay landmark will be one of five mid-Atlantic lighthouses featured in the collection. Officials will dedicate the series Saturday at City Dock. The ceremony starts at 2 p.m. Speakers include: Acting Mayor Sheila FinlaysonCounty Executive Steuart PittmanState Sen. Sarah ElfrethUSPS Maryland District Manager Le Gretta GoodwinU.S. Lighthouse Society Vice President Henry GonzalezFormer Annapolis Mayor Ellen MoyerDavid Gendel, author of "The Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse" Locals can attend the event. The postal service will sell the stamps, and the U.S. Lighthouse Society will offer postcards of Thomas Point. "We are honored to share our lighthouse with the world," Acting Mayor Sheila Finlayson said in a press release. "We hope stamp collectors from around the region will join with us on Saturday as we celebrate this very special recognition." Thomas Point was first lit in 1875. It is the last of 42 screw-pile lighthouses on the Chesapeake to remain in its original location. The site became a National Historic Landmark in 1999. The City of Annapolis owns the site. The U.S. Coast Guard maintains the automated light and the foghorn. The Chesapeake Chapter of the U.S. Lighthouse Society handles the cottage and leads public tours.
