Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today: Widespread flight cancellations continue to plague Myrtle Beach International Airport as Spirit Airlines cancelled 360 flights on Thursday, impacting airports that serve the airline nationwide. The "cancellation chaos" at MYR entered its fifth day on Thursday, with the Department of Transportation indicating that stranded travelers are due refunds for their cancelled flights. (wpde.com)SC Department of Health and Environmental Control says that 20% of Horry County's COVID-19 tests are coming back positive, and that the county has one of the highest incidence rates in the state. The last time numbers were this high was back in February. (WBTW) North Myrtle Beach's plastic bag ban may be delayed another year. The planned ban was approved in 2019 and set to go into effect January 1, 2021. The pandemic caused officials to push the date back to 2022. The ordinance will ban single-use plastic bags with handles, with certain exceptions. Statewide, there are 19 communities that have plastic bag ban ordinances. (WBTW) Universities in Myrtle Beach and Florence areas will receive nearly $70M in emergency funding from the American Rescue Plan. The funds will help higher education institutions deal with the financial impact of the pandemic on their students. (WBTW) Turtle Time: SCUTE volunteers urge caution as hatchlings start returning to the ocean off Myrtle Beach. Experts warn that the hatchlings need an uninterrupted path to return to the ocean. Trash, large holes, and people can get in their way. Beachgoers are urged to stay away, pick up trash and fill in holes.
