JOLIET, IL —The City of Joliet Board of Fire and Police Commissioners held a special meeting Wednesday where the police board approved the hiring of 14 officers, who will join the force in September, the Herald-News reported.
Three other police officer hires also were approved conditionally on the positions becoming open.
The Herald-News reported that the 14 new hires will bring the total number of new officers in the department to 24, after ten new officers joined in April. The overall number of officers in the department now stands at 258. However, more hires are needed.
In February, Patch reported that about a dozen officers retired in 2020, including all four captains, and the department was down to 248 officers from 272. Prior to 2008, The Joliet Police Department had over 300 officers, but those numbers fell when the city budget was reduced during the recession, according to the Herald-News.
