The Whatcom County Public Works Department is looking for an Engineering Technician in the Encroachments Section. The Encroachments Section is responsible for oversight of all private work within County rights-of-way. The Engineering Technicians, also known as the County right-of-way inspectors, review permit applications and work with citizens, contractors, companies, other government entities and developers to approve plan submittals that comply with the Whatcom County Development Standards. After approval a permit is issued and work commences. The Technicians coordinate with private Contractors or homeowners to ensure that work moves forward correctly and safely through field inspections. The team of Engineering Technicians spend the majority of their day in the field to provide construction inspection services and verify that any work being performed in County rights-of-way has been permitted and authorized. When encountering unpermitted work, it is the responsibility of the right-of-way inspectors to bring violators into compliance through the permitting process and protect the integrity of the County roadway system. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of construction activities and construction inspection, be able to communicate effectively with various types of people, work successfully independently as a self-starter and be motivated to ensure compliance with the Whatcom County Development Standards. Qualifications Requires an Associate’s degree (or higher) in Engineering Technology, or a related field. Starting pay depends on numbr of years of related engineering technician experience.
