Help your teenager AND improve your relationship by learning to listen in a way that allows them to open up to you. Are you noticing any of these signs in your teenager? Poor personal hygieneExtreme mood swingsChanges in eating patternsDeclining gradesLoss of interest in activities and hobbiesLack of energy or motivationChange in sleeping patternsWithdrawal from friends and familyIt is no doubt that the last year and a half has taken a psychological toll on people of all ages, but especially teenagers. School closures and enforced social distancing have cut off many teens from major means of psychological support, putting them at higher risk of developing anxiety and depression. According to a recent study by researchers at Stanford, one of the best ways for teenagers to deal with emotional difficulties is for them to feel a sense of connectedness. This sense of connectedness can be regained if lost, or established through learning to actively listen. Listening in this way can be a powerful tool in building a positive relationship with your teenage child through better communication and respect. It results in your teen learning how to express and handle their emotions. This teaches them to be independent and resilient. This type of listening is done with intention and focus to understand the teenager's point of view, using body language, questions, and non-judgmental feedback.
