In a continuing effort to help protect the five endangered species of rhino and their cohabitants, the Greater New Jersey AAZK Alliance, a chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers, Inc. (AAZK) will be sponsoring our eighth annual Bowling for Rhinos (BFR) fundraiser. Funds raised by Bowling For Rhinos are split between conservation programs in Kenya and Indonesia. These programs are leaders in conservation and our donations are used to fund population studies, security patrols, breeding programs, translocation, and to build strong ties with local communities. By protecting rhino habitat we also protect cheetahs, elephants, lions, tigers, giraffes, orangutans, hornbills and countless other species. The International Rhino Foundation (receives 42 % of funds raised) - IRF funds Rhino Protection Units that patroll Way Kambas, Bukit Barisan Selatans, and Ujung Kulon National Parks in Indonesia that are critical to the survival of Sumatran and Javan rhinos. In 2020 the RPUs reported no evidence of rhino poaching, and over 300 individuals were employed to help restore rhino habitat. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy (receives 42% of funds raised) - Lewa protects black and white rhinos living in an area over 60,000 acres in the heart of Kenya. While Lewa has an outstanding track record in both anti-poaching and breeding, it is a world leader in community engagement and cooperation. Lewa assists local communities with clean water, health care, educational opportunities and micro-loans for women’s businesses. Action For Cheetahs in Kenya (receives 8% of funds raised) - ACK works with local communities to mitigate interactions between cheetahs and the community and promote tolerance of cheetahs within the ecosystem. ACK conducts habitat evaluations and population, demographic, health and genetic studies in Kenya. BFR Conservation Resource Grant (receives 2% of funds raised) -This grant has funded many great projects over the years, which have included programs to reduce retaliatory predator poisoning, relocation of rhinos to more suitable habitats and protection of rhinos outside BFR’s core areas.
