?Held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center, the program services elementary students to give them extra support during the summer vacation. The tutors who work with small groups of students are primarily teachers and teaching assistants in the district, who are able to personalize instruction for every child.
"We hope that they improve their literacy skills and are better prepared for the next school year," said Michele Ortiz, director of world languages and ENL. She added that the primary native languages of students in the program are Mandarin Chinese, Punjabi, Spanish and Urdu.
The program is two hours a day for three weeks. Students work on their understanding of grammar, recognition of sight words, reading comprehension skills, writing abilities and vocabulary growth. Resources they use include workbooks, writing notebooks and flashcards.
Anna Razza, a teaching assistant at Summit Lane Elementary School, is working with children entering second grade. She focuses on two letters of the alphabet per day and has her students writing their own stories, completing a few pages each week. ENL teacher Jessica Wimmer reads books aloud to her group, helping students understand sentence structure and learn new words.
