BROOKFIELD, WI — The Elmbrook Humane Society took in nine small animals Sunday for safekeeping after a family of four was displaced by a fire. The animals were taken into the society's safekeep program and all seem to have escaped the fire without any injuries, Heather Gehrke, the humane society director, told Patch. The animals were two tortoises, two hamsters, two rats and three guinea pigs, Gehrke said. The family will take them back as soon as they are in a position to do so, she added. The family that owns the animals were displaced by a fire that broke out in their home Sunday. No one was injured, but seven small animals died, CBS 58 reported. One firefighter was treated and released from a local hospital after suffering a medical emergency during the fire, CBS 58 reported.
