KING COUNTY, WA — Polls have closed around King County and the first glimpse at how things are shaping up for the August primary is just moments away. In the race for King County Executive, incumbent Dow Constantine is seeking a fourth term and drew his first formidable challenge for the office from state Sen. Joe Nguyen. In his Patch candidate profile, Nguyen called for a change after "12 years of the status quo," and wrote that "our most vulnerable communities can't afford another 4 years of broken pledges." Constantine highlighted his office's COVID-19 response and pledged to "finish the job and wrestle this pandemic to the ground." Both candidates identified homelessness as the most pressing issue the region is facing. On Election night, Constantine held a substantial lead. King County Elections projected 40 percent of the county's 1.4 million voters would participate in the primary and estimated more than half of the ballots cast would be delivered or postmarked between Monday and Tuesday. Vote tallies will continue to change in the coming days as later ballots are added to the totals.
