ROUND ROCK, TX — A man who police say was breaking into multiple cars is in the hospital after being shot by a Round Rock police officer, authorities said. Officials said the shooting happened early Wednesday morning after the man pulled a handgun at officers while he was being detained. Police received a 911 call around 5 a.m. for a man breaking into multiple cars in the 1000 block of Christopher Avenue, officials said in a statement Wednesday. When officers arrived, they saw the man exiting a car. While attempting to detain him, the man pulled a handgun, police said. An officer shot at the man and he ran from police, authorities said. Officers were able to establish a perimeter to search for the man. The man was later located at St. David's Hospital in Georgetown with a gunshot wound. He had non-life threatening injuries. Officials said the man is in police custody. The identity of the man and the charges he may face are not yet available. Authorities said the man's handgun was located at the scene and that there is no risk to the public at this time. Round Rock police said it received help from the Cedar Park Police Department, Round Rock ISD Police Department, Travis County Sheriff's Office, Williamson County Sheriff's Office, and Travis County EMS Star Flight. The department is investigating the officer-involved shooting in collaboration with the Williamson County District Attorney's Office, the Texas Rangers, and the FBI. The Officer that discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, per RRPD policy, authorities said.
