JERSEY CITY, NJ — Residents from across Jersey City came out to five parks in the city to take a stand against violence in a radical way: they had fun. For National Night Out in Jersey City, residents celebrated on Tuesday night with barbecues, outdoor games and face painting and music for families. Events alongside police were held in Audubon Park, Pershing Field, Arlington Park and Hamilton Park. This year marked the 37th year of the night out. National Night Out started in August 1984. Today, there are 194 cities that participate in New Jersey. The national night out this year follows a violent month in Jersey City — in late July several shootings brought Jersey City to 16 homicides this year alone — the homicides of the seven months of this year have already matching the number of homicides for the whole of 2020. The National Night Out event gave community members the opportunity to have face-time and connect with police and firefighters in Jersey City.
