Good morning, River City! Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Thursday August 5th, 2021! First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 89 Low: 61. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: A woman who is suing BLM for libel has asked to have an imposter added as a defendant to her lawsuit. According to Karra Crowley, an email with her name on it was sent to BLM headquarters in Sacramento with several racist remarks. She claims that the email address was not hers and that it appeared to be newly created, but the email was posted to Facebook claiming that the information was verified. According to Crowley, the Placer County Sheriff's office verified through Google that the email came from a cell phone belonging to a former tenant. (KCRA3) The City of Sacramento will permanently close a section of 2nd Avenue between 34th Street and Broadway in Oak Park. Community members have said they will feel safer travelling in the area with this section of the roadway closed to vehicle traffic and their concerns were backed up by a data analysis that showed a larger proportion of accidents in the intersection of 34th and 2nd. Pedestrians and bicyclists will continue to be able to use the roadway. (ABC10)National Night Out was a rousing success in Sacramento, with some sites offering vaccinations while you party. Lots of neighborhoods got into the mix, showcasing neighborhood watch programs and showing community spirit. Many had live music and BBQs and one even had Sutter Health on hand with the J&J vaccine. (KCRA3)A Citrus Heights woman was arrested Tuesday after authorities said she set fire to her own home while someone else was inside. Firefighters went to Locher Way for a house fire around 2:30 a.m. When they arrived the structure was already engulfed in flames. No one was injured and no other structures were damaged, but working with the arson division officials said they determined that the homeowner, Justina Daggett had set the fire using gasoline as a propellant. (FOX40)Another local swimmer has done us proud in the Olympics. Open water swimmer Haley Anderson from Granite Bay, along with her teammate, finished in the top 10 in their competition in Tokyo. Though the weather was hotter than what they were used to, it was not a surprise and they had trained for it as best as they could. Each of the US swimmers took a different strategy, with Anderson being the last into the water to avoid the "splash and dash." She swam strong in sixth place most of the race and that is where she finished. Great job, Haley!
