MOKENA, IL — Daniel Potter wasn't facing a batter when he tossed the first pitch at the Joliet Slammers game Aug. 3, but the pressure was still on to fire one in there. That's because a few dozen of his faithful supporters from Berkot's Super Foods in Mokena, as well as members of the community, were on hand to cheer him on. Decked out in black Berkot's T-shirts with "Daniel for Mayor" written on the back, the support team, which had most of its own section to itself, roared in approval when Potter was announced over DuPage Medical Field's public address system. "You know him. You love him. Here's Daniel Potter," the PA system boomed. Potter wound up and fired one down to home plate. The crowd went wild. He's no stranger to the limelight at Slammers' games; by his own admission, he's lost count of how many times he's tossed out the first pitch. But each team is just as exciting as the last, for the fans and for Potter. A man of few words, Potter would only say it was "very cool" to be honored in such a way. He also expressed his gratitude in typical Potter fashion. "Thank you all for coming. I enjoyed it." So did everyone else, Daniel. Mokena Resident Daniel Potter takes some time to mess around with the Joliet Slammers mascot at the game Aug. 3.
