BURBANK, CA — A fiery pileup in Burbank killed three people and injured at least two others Tuesday night in what police are investigating as a possible street-racing, hit-and-run crash. The multi-vehicle collision left one car "partially broken in half," according to the Burbank Police Department. The crash occurred just before midnight at North Glenoaks Boulevard and Andover Drive, near the Burbank Tennis Center. They found two people ejected from one of the vehicles and another trapped in a vehicle engulfed in flames, said a Burbank Police Department spokesman. All three died at the scene, the spokesman said, and at least two people were taken to a trauma center with critical injuries. It was unclear from the mangled wreckage just what happened, and the crash remains under investigation. "I've been doing this for 20 years, and I haven't seen anything like this before," Burbank Police Department Sgt. Emil Brimway told Fox11. Police were investigating whether street racing was involved, according to reports from the scene. "We recently put out a public service announcement about speeding and street racing and how it is illegal and dangerous," Brimway told KTLA5. "We also do targeted enforcement with our traffic bureau, as well as our patrol officers, on a regular basis." Two males and a female died, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office. Their names were withheld, pending notification of their relatives. A Kia and a Mercedes-Benz were traveling northbound on Glenoaks Boulevard when a collision occurred involving a Volkswagen that was making a turn at Andover Drive, KTLA5 reported. Three people in the Volkswagen were killed and a fourth person was hospitalized, reportedly in serious condition. The driver of the Kia was hospitalized in critical condition, the station reported. The driver of the Mercedes, along with a passenger, reportedly suffered minor injuries. Several parked cars were also damaged, police said. Glenoaks Boulevard was closed for while an investigation was conducted into the crash. City News Service and Patch Staffer Paige Austin contributed to this report.
