Dispelling myths and articulating the truths about estate planning. Hello All: When my oldest son, Grady, was a fourth grader, they completed what was called a capstone project. This project required Grady to select a topic of his choosing and study it all year long. He would periodically meet with an adult mentor to discuss his progress. He chose Greek Mythology. After I got over the initial disappointment of him not selecting estate planning as his topic of choice, I was surprised and excited he elected Greek Mythology. I was such a fan of Greek Mythology that I named my childhood dog Hestia (the Greek goddess of the hearth). He did an excellent job, and became a true oracle of knowledge on the topic. What drew both father and son to mythology? I had never discussed it with him. I think we were both allured by the magic and mysticism of mythology. Myths carry a lot of power, and are fun to analyze and discuss. Unfortunately, inherent in myths is a lack of truth. And I see myths all the time in my estate planning practice. People come into client meetings full of half truths or downright incorrect statements regarding estate planning. As a practitioner, my goal is to dispel my clients of the myths and articulate the truth about estate planning. Please join me on Wednesday, August 18th for a Lunch and Learn where we will cover many of the myths associated with estate planning, and discuss what the realities are. I hope to see you there!
